The Sikh Coalition has introduced two bills to the New York City Council. These bills will help make New York City more accepting of all religious groups and protect New York City's communities that are vulnerable to hate crimes.

 New York City Workplace Religious Freedom Restoration Act

The New York City Workplace Religious Freedom Restoration Bill seeks to ensure that all New York City employers grant a reasonable accommodation for the religious practices of their employees.   The New York City human rights law should meet the New York state standard which grants employees more protection by defining "undue hardship" as that action which causes "significant expense or difficulty."  Learn More

 

 

Hate Crime Backlash Prevention Act

The Hate Crime Backlash Prevention Bill proposes that the New York Police Department (NYPD) and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) organize a backlash mitigation plan to be implemented immediately following an event that may initiate backlash, bias, violence or hate crimes against protected groups as defined in the administrative code of the city of New York § 8-102 (22).  Learn More
